The History of BERT 133

Since its start in 1995, BERT has been devoted to FIRST and giving students all the opportunities the FIRST program has to offer.

Today, the Bonny Eagle Robotics Team is a collection of a variety of students from Bonny Eagle High School. As a district school consisting of five towns, we have a fairly large group of people interested in a variety of subjects pertaining to the FIRST program. While largely focused on engineering and machining, students interested in animation, programming, graphic design, schematics, and electrical works are attracted to this program and all are a vital part of our team.

The Johnson & Johnson Sportsmanship Award celebrates outstanding sportsmanship and continuous gracious professionalism in the heat of competition, both on and off the playing field. This award in now known as the Johnson & Johnson Gracious Professionalism Award.

Judges’ Awards -- During the course of the competition the judging panel may decide a team’s unique efforts, performance, or dynamics merit recognition.

The General Motors Industrial Design Award celebrates form and function in an efficiently designed machine that effectively achieves the game challenge.

The Autodesk Visualization Award is an award given to the team that creates the best 30-second animation about the spirit of FIRST
using Autodesk 3ds max.

Regional Champion/Regional Winner -- This award celebrates the team or alliance that wins a regional competition. The number of teams that can win a regional depends on the way the alliances are setup for each year's game.

RadioShack Innovation in Control Award -- This award celebrates an innovative control system or application of control components to provide unique machine functions. In the past, teams have won this for wearable controls, miniature controllable versions of arms, and detecting regions of the field. This award used to be called "Leadership in Control Award".

The Underwriter's Laboratories Industrial Safety Award celebrates the team that progresses beyond safety fundamentals by using innovative ways to eliminate or protect against hazards. The winning team consistently demonstrates excellence in industrial safety performance that shines throughout the competition from uncrating to re-pack.

The award was created in the 2005 season. In that season, it was called the "Industrial Safety Award". In 2006, Underwriter's Laboratories sponsored the award, hence the name change.

The Xerox Creativity Award celebrates creative design, use of a component, or a creative or unique strategy of play.

The Woodie Flowers Award, named after Woodie Flowers, celebrates effective communication in the art and science of engineering and design. Dr. William Murphy and Small Parts, Inc. began this prestigious award in 1996 to recognize mentors who lead, inspire, and empower using excellent communication skills. In simpler terms, a good WFA candidate is someone who works with students, both teaching them and inspiring them in their goals.

The candidate for the award is picked by the students on each team. The students then write an essay describing the qualities of their candidate.

FIRST recognizes one adult team member at each of the 37 regional competitions as a Woodie Flowers Award regional winner. Of these talented mentors, one will receive the Woodie Flowers Award at The Championship Event in Atlanta.

The Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers Entrepreneurship Award celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit. This award recognizes a team, which since its inception has developed the framework for a comprehensive business plan in order to scope, manage, and obtain team objectives. This team displays entrepreneurial enthusiasm and the vital business skills for a self-sustaining program.
